Mensheds Australia, saving an endangered species

Mensheds Australia is a not-for-profit Australian organisation dedicated as the peak body, to resourcing and supporting the men’s shed movement and the needs of their communities.  The growing problems with men’s health, isolation, loneliness and depression are now looming as major men’s health issues.  Last year in Australia, there were 10 million consultations just dealing with mental health issues.

Men’s sheds provides a unique way of addressing men’s health issues and it is a way of capturing existing skills in a community; a way of supporting projects that might be marginal, or outside your normal scope of other community groups, or businesses, or that lack practical skills.  Through collaboration, problem solving and decision-making, a men’s shed can considerably enhance the initiation and implementation of projects, both new and old and improve the lifestyle of many men.

If a community seeks to start a men’s shed, would the concept always be of the workshop kind?  Not at all, each group would need to ascertain where their interests lie within that community, i.e. art, wood, metal, drama, craft, hobbies etc.  What the men’s shed does is secondary to creating an environment for addressing the bringing together of groups of men and helping to address men’s health issues.

Why Do We Need a Men’s Shed in Our Community?  Men’s sheds provides a unique way of addressing men’s health issues and it is a way of capturing existing skills in a community; a way of supporting projects that might be marginal, or outside your normal scope of other community groups, or businesses, or that lack practical skills.  Through collaboration, problem solving and decision-making, a men’s shed can considerably enhance the initiation and implementation of projects, both new and old and improve the lifestyle of many men.

See https://oberonrotary.wordpress.com/this-year/community-service/ – one of the stated aims under community – the club intends promoting the idea of a Men’s Shed
We will try to work the raffle into the roster (I thought everyone liked suprises??!!)
    GP will check the dates….

  2. MG says:

Can the details on the monthly part be sent to the spreadsheet? (eg the DG’s Visit on the 7th september) .
(Are the dates for September meetings correct? )
What is happening about a men’s Shed – is it a project for Oberon? Is it a joint Club project?
Other possible postings – 12th September – Rotary Clubs of Bathurst – international gathering to raise funds for a meningococcal septicamia suffering equestrian to go to the para olympics – Bathurst RSL 6.30
